A Crimson Summer

The frost has disappeared, and we have slipped from winter into the heat. Although it is only September, the days are bright and it is about time for swimming in waterholes and evening barbeques. The last part of the year is before us, topping off almost nine full months that have contained their own challenges and rewards.

The colours of summer bloom brightly. The scarlet of the bottlebrush, and the winking crimson of Sturt's Desert Peas are scattered all over town. The faint glowing streaks of the evening and early morning herald what has once again become the best time to exercise as temperatures are cooler, and layers of clothing previously appropriate for winter have been discarded. It is now short sleeves and hats right from the beginning of the day.

Summer blooms in Alice Springs

The pandemic, for many, has become background noise. If things continue as they are, this year will host the first 'normal' summer, when borders are open and travel is encouraged, since 2020. The scars of the pandemic still bruise Alice Springs: the impact of staff shortages, a straining health system, and the many people who deserted the town to be closer to family are felt every day.

We who stay will see the summer wildflowers bloom. We will dip our feet into Ellery Big Hole, and watch the stars at night, touched by the warm after-dark air. Time and circumstances change, but the desert has always remained. In situations where much has been shaken and few things have stayed solid, the ability to overcome has always lived inside us.

Ideally, as the remainder of the year unfolds, those of us in Alice will look forward to the closure of 2022 with hope in our hearts as we are once again reminded that we do not stand alone. May we be together, whether that be in the Red Centre, or visiting a town or city far away with not-often-seen friends and family. May we all go well.
