From Red Sand to the Sea: Distances

Distance rules Australia. A huge continent, it stretches from its dry interior to the majestic ocean. People choose to live in both these locations and anywhere in between. Long road trips and plane flights are an experience most Australians have at one point or another in their life. Many, however, never see the most remote depths of the outback, which have entered into the legend of what it means to be Australian.

Alice Springs is located in the southern part of the Northern Territory. It boasts no coastline or blue waves and no dew-swept rainforests. When it rains, celebration breaks forth, and swimming takes place in land-locked waterholes, not the churning froth of the ocean.

It is 1500km to Darwin, a harbour-side city that sprawls across the northern coast. It is about the same traveling south to Adelaide, which sits on the ocean on Australia’s underside. Sydney, on the east coast, is roughly a massive 2700km, and to Perth in the west, it is approximately 2400km. For those who live in Alice, the ocean is a faraway destination to be enjoyed on holiday. Some fear the waves, unused to ducking and swimming against currents. Others plunge right in, taking such a rare opportunity when it comes.

The Australian coastline stretches for 34000km. The landscapes across the Great South Land vary enormously depending on their location. No matter where on this continent you find yourself, seize the moment. And never stop looking to experience it all.
